Aurora (the first light of day)

Quatuor pour la fin du Temps by Olivier Messiaen is a marvelous piece of music. Ida asked me to write a piece for the same ensemble, to be performed together with Messian. What a task… Nobody wants to compete with that piece! Instead of denying Messiaen, I decided to search for detaljs in�Quatuor pour la fin du Temps that I would like to work with. With these small components I startet composing fragments for each instrument.

I worked closely with the musicians – first alone one by one, and later together as a group. We had a very good process, and gradually the piece established. Together we carved and polished the material.

The musicians developed a sensitivity for the material that implied that they understood what they were doing, We had a common understanding of where we were going and how to get there.
